SCRIPT: Hi! We're Peter and Gabriel, with a student club called the Navigators and are doing some community outreach today on campus asking people their opinion on the idea of community at NYU- how they define it and where they find it on campus. Do you have a few minutes to talk?
We're wondering, 1. How would you define community? 2. Have you found community on campus? Where? 3. Why do you think we feel such a strong personal need for community? 4. Do you think many people on this campus have community? 5. Why do we feel lonely?
Can I share with you my opinion on this stuff?
Our own answers to these questions… Christians define community as belonging to something greater than ourselves, that takes away loneliness and helps you feel like you belong somewhere.
We need community because we were created not by accident but intentionally by a loving God who created us in his own image. What that means is he created us as relational beings because he's a relational being himself and wants a relationship with us that's healthy and fresh.
Christians believe that in the beginning, we were in perfect union and community with God and each other - until humankind tried to be God ourselves and we turned away from God and said we can do it on our own. This led to separation between us and God and between us and each other. Broken relationship. That results in a need for community and profound loneliness, to the point that we just compete with each other and just use each other for selfish gain, to feel less lonely. People even end up wanting to kill themselves.
We have seen too many suicides on NYU's campus and we want to change the culture of the campus so there's more community for everyone, and people feel less alone.
Christians believe that Jesus died to take away the separation we feel from God and one another that leads to our loneliness. Jesus reconciles us to God and to each other.
Have you ever heard about that? What do you think?
If the conversation is going well: What we are basically talking about as key to creating community is the concept of grace. How would you define grace? (Total acceptance of the Other and of yourself thanks to another's earning it for you).
